RANSA COVID UPDATE 13 JULY

Published Tue 13 Jul 2021

We like the cut of your Jab

Whatever your political preference, few could doubt the sincerity of Gladys Berejiklian’s message to get the jab. The COVID Delta variant has thrown its challenge to Sydney.

The last lockdown saw many ICU beds in preparedness, and we continued our Sailing programme. By contrast, ICU beds are now filling, infections growing daily, and we are not sailing.

As Gladys says, For the sake of your family, friends and the community, I urge you all to be fully vaccinated asap”

We are privileged to have Professor Gordian Fulde AO, Director of Emergency, Critical Care, as RANSA Honorary Surgeon.

Gordian has taken time out to especially tailor a message to all RANSA Members/Sailors:

MY ADVICE IS TO GET VACCINATED ASAP, YES CONTACT YOUR GP TO DISCUSS….

BUT AS A GENERALISATION FOR ALL, AND ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE OF US ARE IN THE NOT YOUNG GROUP, BUT WANT TO ENJOY SAILING CATEGORY…..

IT IS LIKE M.O.B. (Man OverBoard), - and it is you in the water, AND you are increasingly at risk of drowning.

(The Delta mutation infections are increasing everywhere in Sydney, note figures of sick in ICU, hospitals being temporarily shut down, or on emergency surgery only, increasingly rapid through thousands of close contacts…..)

- AS A (LIFE)BOAT COMES TO YOU, YOU TAKE THAT OPPORTUNITY!

ALL THE VACCINES IN OZ ARE PROVEN VERY GOOD AT PREVENTING SEVERE ILLNESS AND DEATH. THE RISK TO ANY OF US AND OF SPREADING IT, IS REAL AND INCREASING.

VACCINATION IS OUR ONLY IMMEDIATE AND LONGTERM HOPE OF DAMAGE CONTROL AND GETTING OUT OF TROUBLE.

Thank you, Gordian, for your time and advice. Indeed, I imagine it is possible that a return to our sailing programs may eventually require vaccination.

The Fortune of War team are encouraging “shots” for all, as early as possible, and while skipper Adrian Gruzman found the Bondi Junction 7-day Medical Centre handy, there are lots more locations now available around Sydney.

RANSA Flag Officers/Directors past and present wish all our Members good health and safety while in isolation at this difficult time - and most importantly, vaccinate as soon as possible.

Kind Regards

Bill Wyllie - Commodore RANSA
