RANSA Regatta Wrap Up

Published Tue 16 Feb 2021

Competitors in this year’s RANSA Regatta were greeted by a clearing Sydney Summer Sunday, moderate to fresh S-SE breezes with the great weather lasting through the race and the after party back at the boatshed.

The Sydney Heritage Fleet’s BOOMERANG was the flagship for the Regatta, and VIPs boarded the magnificent 1903 ‘Gentleman’s Schooner’ at RANSA to watch the race in style. VIPs included  Commodores and Flag Officers from sister Sydney Harbour Clubs, and representatives of our sponsors, all hosted by Commodore Bill Wyllie.

Race Officer John Allan on RANSA ONE got the race away on time, with 71 starters (mostly) starting on their allotted times without incident: all reported a great time on the water, with Sydney Harbour at its best.

Full results are on the RANSA website under SailPass/Race Results or click here for the full results

The Admirals Trophy result was again very close this year with the best scores across the divisions counting with the CYCA taking the trophy for the first time in many years by a single point from RANSA. We are already planning the comeback for next year!

Back at the Club competitors and friends enjoyed Navy Bear Cafe food and RANSA’s famous great value bar. A special thanks to all the volunteers for setting up, manning the bar and selling the raffle tickets, Kate O'Connell and her band The Kate Woolfe Jazz band, Beth Morley for the photography, all contributed to make it a great day with proceeds going to Sir David Martin Foundation.

The prizegiving at 4.30 began with Commodore Wyllie welcoming all to the Club, congratulating all competitors on a great day’s racing, and thanking the sponsors, the race committee, the volunteers and all concerned for making the day such a success. Vice Commodore Les Goodridge introduced CAPT Schlegel who presented the prizes and thanked the Fleet Commander & Navy for their continued support.

Prizes were presented by CAPT Brian Schlegel - Director Maritime Warfare Analysis & Development, but beforehand he told us his true story of being on the bridge and entering a very busy Sydney Harbour in a Navy Frigate during a busy RANSA Regatta like racing sailing fleet. Score 4 for the FFG, if you were there you know the story!

There will be lots of on water photos to come with Beth Morely from Sport Sailing Photography out on the water first on Boomerang and then in a RIB taking shots of the fleet in action. These will be published shortly and will also be available to purchase, details to follow.
