The Sir David Martin Foundation - A Message from Lady Martin

Dear Dave,

This Monday marks 30 years since the death on my much loved husband David - Rear Admiral Sir David Martin KCMG AO RAN, the 34th Governor of New South Wales.

When I think about all the events that have happened since 1990, it is astonishing that our Family Foundation has weathered the storms to still be here today. We are continuing to save young people in crisis, just as David had wished.

David was a modest man and I think he would have been genuinely surprised that the Foundation that carried his name had continued for so many years. If he was looking over my shoulder now, he’d say, "it’s not about me, or us, it’s about the young people, and those who support the Foundation."

Because of you, Sir David Martin Foundation has, over the last 30 years, been able to save thousands of the most vulnerable young Australians. I believe, as did David, that with the appropriate help, these young people can achieve lasting positive change in their lives.

I would also like to also to acknowledge the program staff and volunteers who work so tirelessly. We are also very honoured and fortunate to have had the continued Patronage of The Governor of NSW. It has truly been a team effort to get us to where we are in 2020!

I can’t imagine that there are many other charities who have as loyal and generous donors as our Foundation does. There are hundreds of you who have been giving since the launch of the Foundation in 1990. When we first began, I used to help in the office, opening envelopes and sending out thank you letters. It was some time before we had our first General Manager.

On behalf of the Martin family I thank you all so much for your dedicated and warm-hearted support. I think that David, with his vision for young people of ‘safety hope and opportunity’, would be very thankful that you have continued to make his dream a reality.

He believed in young people. Thank you for sharing in his vision.

Kind wishes,

Susie Martin OAM
